Also called: Short dramas, Vertical dramas or vertical series, Micro-soaps, Mini-telenovelas
Microdramas are scripted stories told in brief, often vertically filmed episodes, designed primarily for mobile viewing.
Detailed definition
What is a microdrama?
Microdramas combine the continuing storyline of a television drama with the brevity and mobile accessibility of short-form video. The format developed at scale in China, where it is associated with terms such as duanju and wei duanju. It has since expanded internationally through social platforms, broadcaster applications and dedicated services.
A microdrama series may contain dozens of short episodes. Each episode commonly lasts a few minutes and use rapid plot development, strong opening hooks and cliffhangers intended to encourage continued viewing. Romance, crime, family conflict and suspense are common genres, but the format can support any serialized scripted story.
Microdramas are frequently produced in a 9:16 vertical aspect ratio for smartphone viewing. However, aspect ratio alone does not define the format: a vertical news clip is not a microdrama.
How are microdramas distributed?
Microdramas may be distributed through:
Dedicated microdrama applications.
Social platforms such as TikTok, YouTube and Instagram.
Advertising-supported or subscription-based services.
Broadcaster and streaming applications.
Advertising-supported or subscription-based services.
Freemium services that provide introductory episodes before requiring payment or ad viewing.
For media operations teams, microdramas introduce large episode counts, mobile-specific renditions, frequent publishing schedules and extensive metadata requirements. The same story may also need different versions for social discovery, an OTT catalogue and other distribution destinations.
Short-form content versus microdrama
Short-form describes the content’s compact duration and consumption pattern. Microdrama describes a particular scripted and serialized storytelling format.
A sports highlight, promotional trailer or news clip can be short-form without being a microdrama. A microdrama episode is generally short-form, but it also belongs to a continuing narrative.
Examples
A serialized romance comprising 60 vertical episodes, each approximately two minutes long.
A crime story that ends every episode with a new clue or cliffhanger.
A broadcaster adding mobile-first drama episodes to its existing streaming application.
